The redtail splitfin is a colorful goodied native to Mexico. The fish are livebearers like guppies and mollies and females give birth to 5-20 young after approximately 2 months of gestation. Newborn fry are large at about 2/3" in size. Males are colorful with red-orange tails and distinct yellow, blue, and red bands on their bodies. Females are olive brown and large mature females will have scattered blue scales on the rear 1/4 of their bodies. Adult females are slightly larger than males and grow to 3". Males max out at about 2.5". These fish are very active and are the opposite of shy.
The redtail splitfin is hardy and undemanding and will accept a wide range of frozen, live, and prepared foods. Their diet should have some vegetable matter such as a prepared flake food that has a vegetable component in the ingredients. They prefer hard, alkaline water and can tolerate temperatures ranging from 59-86 F.
