"Cinema "Nizami" 02.11.1942."
Baku and the North Caucasus was the main source of oil for the entire economy of the USSR. Up to 80% of the oil of the entire USSR was extracted in the
Azerbaijan SSR. The loss of the Caucasus could have a significant impact on the  overall course of the war against the USSR,
so Hitler chose this direction as the main one. The army group, created for the offensive in the Caucasus, received the code designation "A".
The task of group "A" was: to encircle and destroy south and southeast of Rostov-on-Don the troops of the Southern Front, which had retreated across the
Don River, and to capture the North Caucasus; then it was supposed to bypass the Greater Caucasus with one group from the west, capturing Novorossiysk
and Tuapse, and with another group from the east, seizing the oil-bearing regions of Grozny and Baku. Simultaneously with the bypass maneuver, it was
planned to overcome the Dividing Range in its central part along the passes and exit to Georgia.
Operation "Edelweiss" German troops were approaching Transcaucasia. The date of the capture of Baku was even set - September 25, 1942.
Defensive areas were created around Nalchik, Ordzhonikidze, Grozny, Makhachkala and Baku.
The first stage of the battle for the Caucasus took place from July to December 1942.
