FROM GOLD TO PORCELAIN – THE ART OF PORCELAIN AND FAIENCE
by Ruth Berges, Thomas Yoseloff, NY, 1963 /1965.
As far as possible and practical, the chapters of this book have been arranged chronologically, although each may be read independently of the others.  Twenty-one chapters present twenty-one different subjects in the field of faience and porcelain.  Two chapters cover Oriental porcelain wares from China and Japan.  The second section of the book comprises the story of faience in five major European countries including German Meissen; French Sevres, Chantilly, Mennecy, Saint Cloud and others; Italy’s Capo di Monte, Buen Retiro, Naples and others; English Chelsea; the Thuringian porcelain factories of Volkstedt, Gotha, Wallendorf, Grossbreitenbach, and others.  The third section focuses on the discovery and development of European porcelain, its prevailing styles, its peak of achievement, and its decline.  The fourth section takes a close look at some of the artists – the porcelain modellers and painters – at their lives, their aims, and the characteristics of their art.  Artists include Kandler, Lowenfinck, the Hannong family, Bustelli, Melchior, and the
Hausmaler
.  The final chapters deal with specific subjects as expressed through the medium of porcelain. This is a scholarly text that belongs in the permanent library of the collector, dealer, or historian of antique pottery and porcelain wares.
