In the Soviet army, every soldier knew that demobilization was inevitable, like the collapse of world imperialism. How could anyone have thought then that the collapse of the Union would come earlier. Demob albums are kept in the family archives by fragments of the era.
When and why the tradition arose to bring demobilized albums from the army - go and find out now. It can be assumed that the suitcases with which the soldiers of the Red Army returned from service after the war were the prototype - from the inside they were pasted over with pictures and photographs.
The Dembel album is not just a collection of photographs: although they had to be not only taken, but also developed and printed, the main thing here is the design. It should be bright and beautiful - the way ordinary 19-year-old boys understood it. In the second year of service (in some units, 100 days before the order), the soldiers began to perform the divine service, obeying unwritten rules.
Tracing paper - required
It was not difficult to buy the base - an ordinary photo album, at least during the leave in the nearest store, in which the soldier's path has been trodden for years. And then the fun began. The cover was covered with a greatcoat cloth (or velvet) and decorated with a crush (stamping) - inscriptions and silhouettes of military equipment cut out of copper and decorated with a pattern, indicating the years of service and the type of troops. Those who could not do it themselves - cooperated with their comrades.
The dull gray sheets of the photo album were transformed: at first they were painted with ink, then colored gouache was sprayed on top with a toothbrush. Beauty! The edges of the pages were pasted over with velvet paper or foil so that they would not fray. Decorated with any available material: postcards, magazine clippings.
A separate art form is tracing paper (thin transparent paper between pages). There must be a drawing on it. Not everyone was an artist, so the tracing paper was redrawn from each other many times. They show unpretentious humorous scenes from army life: lunch in the dining room, alarm, lights out. Or just military equipment, for example, a MiG soaring up.
How could the albums of guys, deprived of girlish attention for years, do without a romantic theme! Girls are present both on tracing paper and in poetry. But not in the pictures.
The album was crowned, as a rule, with an order from the Minister of Defense to dismiss another draft from the armed forces, entwined with home-made decor. Now the service, which I gave two or three years, is practically history.
Snapshots in chronology
From every page, beardless boys, buttoned up, with berets and earflaps dashingly wrung at the back of their heads, are watching, riding a tank gun or standing on the deck of a cruiser. Alone and in an embrace with friends. Right there - the fathers-commanders. Amateur photographs are side by side with those taken in the photo studio, preferably in chronological order. Something imperceptibly common in these faces is probably youth. Or maybe an era?
