CERTAINLY A PRIZE COLLECTIBLE FOR ANYBODY TRACKING OUR HISTORYWITH RARE MOMENTOS FROM SITES OF IMPORTANT EVENTS!
A cup of "salutation"
most likely greeting those who reached the summit of the 14,000 foot peak
of this awesome mountain on the fringe of the southern front range of the Rocky Mountains.
Famed for its 1859 gold rush and the motto, "Pike's Peak or Bust," the site became a national
tourist destination and a "cog" railroad was built (in the early 1890's) which could climb the steep
incline to the top.
All varieties of scenic wonders existed for visitation both at the base and along the way up.
These included
a huge boulder appearing to have no sign of support beneath it,
called "Balanced Rock," a "Garden of the gods," "Gateway Garden of the gods,"
"Summit Pike's Peak," "Seven Falls Cheyenne Canyon," "Antler's Hotel Colorado Springs,"
"Narrows Williams Canyon."
Note: The Antler's Hotel (last photo) dates to 1901. After a fire destroyed
the former hotel, this one
with Italian Renaissance architecture, designed by the
Varian and Sterner architectural firm. The new hotel had 200 elegant guestrooms,
a restaurant, a ballroomand mosaic floors. Over the years many influential presidents
visited the hotel, including Warren G. Harding, William Howard Taft and
Theodore Roosevelt, who gave a speech off a hotel balcony.
Everything in quotes appears both as a caption and as a pictorial scene in relief on the cup.
Pysical details: Surrounding the body of the cup is a floral vine motif, artistically separating
the scenes depicted. The lip of the cup has very slight petal-like waviness, creating
an impression of mountain flora.
The metal appears to be brass with a hard-baked brown paint surface,
with areas gilt to bring out the design. There is minimal aging or signs of wear. Bottom has shallow
scratches.
I have included a photo of the scenic area, as well as a historic photo from the gold rush days.
Size: 3 1/2 inches tall by 2 1/2 inches wide at mouth.
