    Description

A BEAUTIFUL and RARE PIECE OF MOTHER EARTH -
A ENGAGING PIECE OF OBSIDIAN  IS A WONDERFUL SPECIMEN OF WHAT THE EARTH HAS GIVEN TO US.
    .
For centuries this material has been produced when lava is extruded from a volcanic cooling rapidly with a minimum of crystal growth.  The volcanic flows have a high content of silica.  This high viscosity of atomic diffusion and together with  the rapid cooling, this results in a natural glass from the lava, its parent material.
This dense mineral- stone is hard, brittle, and amorphous, it therefore fractures with sharp edges.  In the past it was used to manufacture cutting and piercing tools, and at one time was experimentally used as surgical scapel blades. Obsidian is mineral-like, but not a true mineral because as a glass it is not crystalline; additionally its composition is too variable to be truly classified as a mineral.
In it pure form it is usually dark in appearance, though colors may vary depending on the impurities present, i.e., iron may give dark brown, to black, other inclusions of small white clusters may give a snowflake pattern.  Others may appear golden, rainbow (from Mexico), striped.  Other areas are Argentina, Canada, Italy, and western U.S., including AZ, CO, TX, and UT.  Obsidian was often used in religious ceremonies.
    CURRENT USE:
Used to make extremely sharp knives, and although not approved by the Food and Drug Admin.(FDA) some countries do employ the use as surgical instruments.
    Obsidian
is also used for ornamental purposes and
    as a gemstone.
It present a different appearance depending on how it is cut:  in one direction it is jet black, while in another it is glistening grey.  The hardness on the Mohs scale is 5 - 6.
THIS SPECIMEN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS "RED"/ "MAHOGANY".
It is a large gem with the deepest possible tone of red, the darker is black.  Tone is another name for colour  for light and darkness of a gem.  The purity of its saturation is very intense, strong.
Prices vary from .00 to 0.00 per carat weight.  Price points have been determined by the "Live Auctions" and "Jasper 52" websites, that have taken place within the past six (6) months.  This piece is over 40 carats.)   Because I do not profess to be anything but a former collector of geology specimens, I have priced the piece for sale at what I deem is a fair and reasonable price according to my knowledge.
This particular piece is described as follows:
One (1) piece, Obsidian, Red Cabochon, Oval, 34 x 22 mm.  It is 7.95 mm height, for a total carat weight of 42.51 carats.  It is NOT a doublet/or triplet.
Various ways to wear this gemstone as jewelry are:   (1) rings, (2) pendant, (3) incorporated into a bracelet,  (4) and placed in the ear.
I tried to give the Buyer of this magnificent piece a photographed view of how it would appear as jewelry.  The Chains photographed with the gem
    are not
    a part of this sale.
